The Missouri Reign have won two of its last three games and look to carry that momentum into a rematch against FC Pride.
The Reign (2-0-3) have a difficult matchup not only this week, but for the remainder of the season. All three opponents they have left are ahead of them in the standings, making each game crucial. Reign coach Dakota Acock and his team accept the challenges ahead of them.
"We love hard games," Acock said. "We want to have that mentality of rising to the occasion and beating solid teams, not hoping someone has an off day and we get lucky."
The Pride (3-1-0) are one of two teams in the division still unbeaten on the season. Their lone blemish on an otherwise perfect season thus far came in a 1-1 tie to Lou Fusz (which is also undefeated) on May 30. FC is coming off a 2-0 victory over Junction FC last Thursday. However, this is the first road game of the season for the Pride, and road games are never easy. Coach Acock echoed this sentiment.
"I hope Pride travels well," Acock said. "They are a talented team, we want to eat them at their best."
The Reign are 1-0 at home this season and look to continue being unbeaten on home turf.
With the season winding down, the Reign are beginning to rematch opponents it has already faced once this season. The first time the two squads faced off, the Pride emerged with a 4-2 victory. Holland Hawkins scored both Reign goals in the defeat. Due to the familiarity with the opponent, it can be easier to game plan.
However, that was the Reign's opening game of the season. The team three weeks ago versus the current version look completely different. They have improved and built up more confidence and chemistry, resulting in two victories a team. The Reign are coming off a 3-1 win against Junction.
According to Acock, in the first matchup against the Pride, the Reign learned more about themselves as a whole, overcame adversity and had to solve problems. Now that they have familiarity with the opponent, they hope to have better starts, take control of the game and get the wins needed to advance to the playoffs for the first time in program history.
The rematch is set for 5 p.m. Friday at R. Marvin Owens Field.
